So you’ve been doing pilates for a few years now. You’ve mastered the basics, learned the advanced techniques, and now you want to share your knowledge with other people who want to get in shape. You already have the skills, but before you go out and open up your own studio, you should first make sure you have one very important thing – a pilates certification.

Basic Pilates Certification

A pilates instructor certification is usually divided into two basic forms: one that covers teaching pilates on a mat and another, more comprehensive one that encompasses all pilates-related equipment. The former can be considered entry-level and can be taken by those who have sufficient proficiency with pilates. Those who take mat instructor classes will learn all the ins and outs of the basic mat exercises used in pilates. They will also explore ways to tweak and fine tune these mat exercises so that they can be of use to different kinds of people. Depending on the training facility, one can finish mat certification training over the course of a weekend.

Advanced Pilates Certification

Comprehensive pilates training is more advanced as it moves beyond the mat and trains instructors in the use of all the equipment used in pilates exercises. As such, you will need to have been taking pilates classes for about a year before you can even begin to think about taking the test. Having an advanced pilates certification will be a good background as well. Since it covers a lot of different pilates equipment, comprehensive pilates certification will take longer to complete. This sometimes takes over a year. Time and dedication will play a very large part in completing this process.

If you’re serious about using your pilates knowledge to share the wonders of discipline with others, these two certification programs will play key roles. It’s important to keep in mind, though, that training programs are not standardized. Try to learn as much as you can so your future students, in turn, will get more out of your classes.
