There is, for some people, an innate need or desire to impart knowledge and teach others about what they have learned. This doesn’t just apply to life lessons or profound wisdom; it also applies even to the simple things like how to live a healthier life. If this is exactly what Pilates has given you, and you want to help others get started on staying fit and living healthy through teaching, the first thing you need to do is to get a Pilates instructor certification.

Types of Certifications

Contrary to what many think, getting certified as a Pilates instructor isn’t a generic, across-the-board kind of thing. There are different types of Pilates instructor certification depending on the specific practice you wish to teach. For example, you can get certified teaching Pilates mat exercises, Pilates with the Reformer, and so on. So if you want to do and teach Pilates professionally, the first thing you need to do is decide on your specialization so you can take the best teaching program that applies.

There is also the option of getting a comprehensive certification, which will qualify you to teach Pilates exercises in all its forms (mat instruction, for the Reformer, Cadillac, and other equipment, etc.). This type of Pilates instructor certification costs more and takes longer to complete. Requirements include a specific number of hours of working as an apprentice teacher, and completion of a Pilates mat instructor program.

Where to Get Certified

Pilates instructor certification is offered by various industry organizations and associations. There is no single body that has a monopoly on handing out these certifications. However, one association recognized in the industry is the PMA or Pilates Method Alliance. The PMA created an exam that students take after completing their Pilates instructor training or program, and was formulated to make sure the would-be instructors meet the professional requirements of being a certified Pilates instructor. So before you sign up for any program, do your research and make sure the school or training center is recognized by the PMA.
